Jacob bendice a Manasés y a Efraín
1 Pasado algún tiempo, José se enteró de que su padre estaba muy enfermo, así que tomó a sus dos hijos, Manasés y Efraín, y fue a visitarlo. 2 Cuando le dijeron a Jacob que José había llegado para verlo, Jacob hizo un esfuerzo y se levantó de la cama. 3 Y le dijo a José:
—El Dios todopoderoso se me apareció en Betel, una ciudad de Canaán. Allí me bendijo 4 y me hizo esta promesa: “Yo haré que tengas muchos hijos y descendientes. Y de tus descendientes se formarán muchos pueblos, y esta tierra será siempre de ellos”.
5 »Efraín y Manasés, los dos hijos que tuviste en Egipto antes de que yo viniera, serán considerados como mis propios hijos; serán tan míos como lo son Rubén y Simeón. 6 Los hijos que tengas después de ellos ya serán considerados como tuyos, y en el territorio que reciban se les reconocerá por el nombre de sus hermanos.
7 »Para tristeza mía, tu madre Raquel murió en el camino, cuando yo regresaba de Padán-aram. Murió en la tierra de Canaán, muy cerca de la ciudad de Efrata, así que allí la enterré, junto al camino. Efrata es el mismo pueblo que ahora llaman Belén.
8 De pronto, Jacob vio a los hijos de José, y le preguntó:
—Y estos, ¿quiénes son?
9-10 José le respondió:
—Son los hijos que Dios me ha dado aquí en Egipto.
Como Jacob ya no podía ver bien por causa de su edad, le pidió a José:
—Acércamelos. Voy a bendecirlos.
José los acercó a su padre, y él los besó y los abrazó. 11 Entonces le dijo a José:
—Yo había perdido las esperanzas de volver a verte, y sin embargo Dios me ha permitido ver también a tus hijos.
12 José quitó a sus hijos de las rodillas de su padre, y se inclinó ante él. 13 Puso a Efraín a su derecha y a Manasés a su izquierda, y los acercó a su padre. Así Efraín quedó a la izquierda de Jacob, y Manasés a su derecha. 14 Sin embargo, Jacob cruzó los brazos y puso su mano derecha sobre la cabeza de Efraín, que era el menor, y su mano izquierda la puso sobre la cabeza de Manasés, a pesar de que este era el mayor. 15 Entonces bendijo a José con estas palabras:
«El Dios de mi abuelo Abraham
y de mi padre Isaac,
me ha guiado toda mi vida.
16 También ha enviado a su ángel
para librarme de muchos peligros.
Yo le pido que bendiga
a estos dos muchachos.
Que por medio de ellos
sea recordado mi nombre,
el nombre de mi abuelo Abraham
y el de mi padre Isaac.
¡Que tengan muchos hijos!»
17 A José no le gustó ver que su padre pusiera su mano derecha sobre la cabeza de Efraín, así que se la quitó de la cabeza de Efraín y la puso sobre la cabeza de Manasés, 18 mientras le decía:
—¡Así no, padre mío! ¡Mi hijo mayor es Manasés! ¡Pon tu mano derecha sobre su cabeza!
19 Pero Jacob no quiso hacerlo así, y le dijo:
—Ya lo sé, hijo mío; ya lo sé. También Manasés llegará a ser un gran pueblo. Sin embargo, su hermano menor será más importante que él, y sus descendientes llegarán a formar un grupo de naciones.
20 Así fue como ese día Jacob le dio a Efraín el lugar de Manasés. Entonces dijo:
—Cuando mis descendientes bendigan a alguien, le dirán:
“¡Que Dios te bendiga
como bendijo a Efraín y a Manasés!”
21 Luego le dijo a José:
—Ya me falta poco para morir, pero Dios estará contigo y te hará volver a la tierra de tus abuelos. 22 Y como tú estás por encima de tus hermanos, te doy el monte de Siquem, que les quité a los amorreos en mi lucha contra ellos.
1 And it came to pass after these things, that one told Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 2 And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed. 3 And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me, 4 And said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of people; and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession.
5 ¶ And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine. 6 And thy issue, which thou begettest after them, shall be thine, and shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance. 7 And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same is Beth-lehem.
8 And Israel beheld Joseph’s sons, and said, Who are these? 9 And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place . And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them. 10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them. 11 And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed. 12 And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near unto him. 14 And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.
15 ¶ And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, 16 The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. 17 And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head. 18 And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head. 19 And his father refused, and said, I know it , my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. 20 And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers. 22 Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
