Los filisteos devuelven el cofre
1 Como el cofre del pacto de Dios ya había estado siete meses en su tierra, 2 los filisteos mandaron a llamar a sus sacerdotes y adivinos, y les preguntaron:
—¿Qué podemos hacer con el cofre del pacto de Dios? ¿Cómo podemos enviarlo de vuelta a su lugar?
3 Ellos les contestaron:
—Si lo regresan, deben enviar también ofrendas para pagar por el error de haberlo capturado. Solo así sanarán de los tumores y entenderán por qué Dios no ha dejado de castigarlos.
4-5 Los filisteos volvieron a preguntar:
—¿Qué ofrenda podemos presentarle al Dios de Israel para que nos perdone?
Y les contestaron:
—Hagan figuras de los tumores y de las ratas que están destruyendo el país. Como ustedes tienen cinco jefes, deben enviar cinco tumores de oro y cinco ratas de oro. Así reconocerán que el Dios de Israel es muy poderoso; tal vez él deje de castigar al pueblo, a sus jefes, a sus dioses y a su tierra.
6 »No vayan a portarse como el rey de Egipto y su gente. Ellos se pusieron muy tercos, y solo cuando Dios los castigó duramente dejaron que los israelitas se fueran de Egipto.
7-9 »Si quieren saber si fue el Dios de Israel quien los castigó, hagan lo siguiente: Construyan una carreta nueva. Esa carreta deben jalarla dos vacas que nunca hayan trabajado con el yugo puesto ni hayan jalado ninguna carreta. Las vacas deben estar criando terneros.
»Como lo normal es que las vacas vayan hacia donde están sus terneros, encierren a los terneros en el establo. Pongan luego el cofre del pacto de Dios en la carreta, y en una caja pongan las figuras de oro que hicieron. Una vez que hayan hecho esto, suelten la carreta para que las vacas se lleven la ofrenda.
»Fíjense entonces hacia dónde se dirigen las vacas. Si se van hacia Bet-semes, que es un pueblo israelita, podemos estar seguros de que fue el Dios de los israelitas quien nos causó tanto daño. Si no sucede así, entonces sabremos que no fue su Dios quien nos castigó, sino que todo esto fue un accidente.
10 Así lo hicieron los filisteos. Pusieron dos vacas para que llevaran el carro, y a los terneros recién nacidos los encerraron en un establo. 11 Luego pusieron en la carreta el cofre del pacto de Dios y la caja con las figuras de oro, y dejaron que las vacas se llevaran la carreta.
12 Las vacas se fueron directamente a Bet-semes. En ningún momento se apartaron del camino ni dejaron de mugir por sus terneros. Por su parte, los jefes filisteos las siguieron hasta que estuvieron cerca de Bet-semes.
13 La gente de ese lugar estaba cosechando trigo en el valle que está frente al pueblo. Cuando vieron el cofre, les dio mucha alegría. 14-15 La carreta se detuvo junto a una gran piedra que estaba en el campo de un hombre llamado Josué. Entonces los ayudantes de los sacerdotes bajaron el cofre del pacto de Dios y la caja con las figuras de oro, y los pusieron sobre esa gran piedra. Luego los israelitas tomaron la carreta, la hicieron leña, y sacrificaron las vacas como ofrenda a Dios. Además, ese día le presentaron a Dios otras ofrendas.
16 Los cinco jefes filisteos se quedaron a cierta distancia, y después de haber observado todo esto, ese mismo día regresaron a Ecrón. 17 Los filisteos tenían cinco ciudades principales: Asdod, Gaza, Ascalón, Gat y Ecrón. Por cada una de ellas, los jefes filisteos enviaron una figura de oro como ofrenda a Dios, 18 y por cada ciudad y pueblo, enviaron un ratón de oro.
En cuanto a la gran piedra sobre la que colocaron el cofre del pacto de Dios, hasta el día de hoy se conserva en el campo de Josué, el de Bet-semes, como testimonio de todo esto. 19 Mientras el cofre estuvo en Bet-semes, Dios castigó con la muerte a setenta hombres que se atrevieron a mirar dentro del cofre. Toda la gente del pueblo lloró mucho por eso, 20 y decía: «Nadie puede vivir delante de un Dios tan poderoso como el nuestro. Es mejor que mandemos el cofre a otro lugar».
21 Cerca de allí había una aldea llamada Quiriat-jearim. Entonces mandaron a decir a la gente de allí: «Los filisteos nos han devuelto el cofre del pacto de Dios. Vengan por él».
1 And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place. 3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. 4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords. 5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. 6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed? 7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them: 8 And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go. 9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.
10 ¶ And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home: 11 And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods. 12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh. 13 And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it . 14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD. 15 And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were , and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD. 16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it , they returned to Ekron the same day. 17 And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one; 18 And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-shemite.
19 ¶ And he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter. 20 And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?
21 ¶ And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.
