No confíes en las riquezas
SALMO 49 (48)
(1) Himno compuesto por la familia de Coré.
1-2 1-2 (2-3) ¡Escúchenme ustedes,
pueblos que habitan este mundo!
Y ustedes, gente pobre y humilde;
y ustedes, gente rica y poderosa,
¡préstenme atención!
3 3 (4) No solo voy a hablarles
como habla la gente sabia,
sino que expresaré mis ideas
con la mayor inteligencia.
4 4 (5) Voy a decirles una adivinanza,
y mientras toco el arpa
les diré de qué se trata.
5 5 (6) ¿Por qué voy a tener miedo
cuando lleguen los problemas?
¿Por qué voy a tener miedo
cuando me ataquen mis enemigos?
6 6 (7) ¡No tengo por qué temerles
a esos ricos orgullosos
que confían en sus riquezas!
7 7 (8) Ninguno de ellos
es capaz de salvar a otros;
ninguno de ellos
tiene comprada la vida.
8 8 (9) La vida tiene un precio muy alto:
¡ningún dinero la puede comprar!
9 9 (10) No hay quien viva para siempre
y nunca llegue a morir.
10 10 (11) Mueren los sabios,
y mueren los necios.
¡Eso no es nada nuevo!
Al fin de cuentas,
sus riquezas pasan a otras manos.
11 11 (12) Podrán haber tenido tierras,
y haberlas puesto a su nombre,
pero su hogar permanente
será tan solo la tumba;
¡de allí no saldrán jamás!
12 12 (13) Puede alguien ser muy rico,
y no vivir para siempre;
al fin le espera la muerte
como a cualquier animal.
13 13 (14) Esto es lo que les espera
a quienes confían en sí mismos;
en esto acaban los orgullosos.
14 14 (15) Su destino final es el sepulcro;
la muerte los va llevando
como guía el pastor a sus ovejas.
En cuanto bajen a la tumba,
abandonarán sus antiguos dominios.
El día de mañana
los justos abrirán sus tumbas
y esparcirán sus huesos.
15 15 (16) ¡Pero a mí, Dios me librará
del poder de la muerte,
y me llevará a vivir con él!
16 16 (17) Tú no te fijes
en los que se hacen ricos
y llenan su casa con lujos,
17 17 (18) pues cuando se mueran
no van a llevarse nada.
18 18 (19) Mientras estén con vida,
tal vez se sientan contentos
y haya quien los felicite
por tener tanto dinero;
19 19 (20) pero al fin de cuentas
no volverán a ver la luz;
morirán como murieron sus padres.
20 20 (21) Puede alguien ser muy rico,
y jamás imaginarse
que al fin le espera la muerte
como a cualquier animal.

1 Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:
2 Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
6 They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
8 (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
10 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.
13 This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
17 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.
19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
