1 Entonces Pilato ordenó que le dieran azotes a Jesús. 2 Luego, los soldados romanos hicieron una corona de espinas y se la pusieron a Jesús. También le pusieron un manto de color rojo oscuro 3 y, acercándose a él, dijeron: «¡Viva el rey de los judíos!» Y lo golpeaban en la cara.
4 Pilato volvió a salir, y dijo a la gente: «¡Escuchen! Ordené que traigan a Jesús de nuevo. Yo no creo que sea culpable de nada malo.»
5 Cuando sacaron a Jesús, llevaba puesta la corona de espinas y vestía el manto rojo. Pilato dijo:
—¡Aquí está el hombre!
6 Cuando los jefes de los sacerdotes y los guardias del templo vieron a Jesús, comenzaron a gritar:
—¡Clávalo en una cruz! ¡Clávalo en una cruz!
Pilato les dijo:
—Yo no creo que sea culpable de nada. Así que llévenselo y clávenlo en la cruz ustedes mismos.
7 La gente respondió:
—De acuerdo a nuestra ley, este hombre tiene que morir porque dice ser el Hijo de Dios.
8 Cuando Pilato oyó lo que decían, sintió más miedo. 9 Volvió a entrar en el palacio, llamó a Jesús y le preguntó:
—¿De dónde eres?
Pero Jesús no le contestó. 10 Entonces Pilato le dijo:
—¿No me vas a contestar? ¿Acaso no sabes que tengo poder para mandar que te dejen libre, o para que mueras clavado en una cruz?
11 Jesús le respondió:
—No tendrías ningún poder sobre mí, si Dios no te lo hubiera dado. El hombre que me entregó es más culpable de pecado que tú.
12 A partir de ese momento, Pilato buscó la manera de dejar libre a Jesús, pero la gente gritó:
—¡Si dejas libre a ese hombre, no eres amigo del emperador romano! ¡Cualquiera que quiera hacerse rey, es enemigo del emperador!
13 Al oír esto, Pilato mandó que sacaran a Jesús del palacio. Luego se sentó en el asiento del tribunal, en un lugar llamado Gabatá, que en hebreo significa El Empedrado. 14 Faltaba un día para la fiesta de la Pascua, y eran como las doce del día. Entonces Pilato dijo a los judíos:
—¡Aquí tienen a su rey!
15 Pero la gente gritó:
—¡Clávalo en una cruz! ¡Clávalo en una cruz!
Pilato les preguntó:
—¿De veras quieren que mate a su rey?
Y los sacerdotes principales le respondieron:
—¡Nosotros no tenemos más rey que el emperador de Roma!
16 Entonces Pilato les entregó a Jesús para que lo mataran en una cruz, y ellos se lo llevaron.
Jesús es clavado en una cruz
(Mt 27.32-44Mc 15.21-32Lc 23.26-43)17 Jesús salió de allí cargando su propia cruz, y fue al lugar llamado Gólgota, que en hebreo significa «Lugar de la Calavera». 18 Allí clavaron a Jesús en la cruz. También crucificaron a otros dos hombres, uno a cada lado de Jesús.
19-20 Pilato ordenó que escribieran un letrero que explicara por qué habían matado a Jesús. El letrero fue escrito en tres idiomas: hebreo, latín y griego; y decía: «Jesús de Nazaret, Rey de los judíos». Colocaron el letrero en la cruz, por encima de la cabeza de Jesús.
Como el lugar donde clavaron a Jesús estaba cerca de la ciudad, muchos judíos leyeron el letrero. 21 Por eso los sacerdotes principales le dijeron a Pilato:
—No escribas: “Rey de los judíos”. Más bien debes escribir: “Este hombre afirma ser el Rey de los judíos.”
22 Pilato les dijo:
—Lo que he escrito así se queda.
23 Después de que los soldados romanos clavaron a Jesús en la cruz, recogieron su ropa y la partieron en cuatro pedazos, una para cada soldado. También tomaron el manto de Jesús, pero como era un tejido de una sola pieza y sin costuras, 24 decidieron no romperlo, sino echarlo a la suerte, para ver quién se quedaría con él. Así se cumplió lo que dice la Biblia:
«Hicieron un sorteo
para ver quién se quedaba con mi ropa.»
25 Cerca de la cruz estaban María la madre de Jesús, María la esposa de Cleofás y tía de Jesús, y María Magdalena. 26 Cuando Jesús vio a su madre junto al discípulo preferido, le dijo a ella: «Madre, ahí tienes a tu hijo.» 27 Después le dijo al discípulo: «Ahí tienes a tu madre.» Y a partir de ese momento, el discípulo llevó a María a su propia casa.
La muerte de Jesús
(Mt 27.45-56Mc 15.33-41Lc 23.44-49)28 Jesús sabía que ya había hecho todo lo que Dios le había ordenado. Por eso, y para que se cumpliera lo que dice la Biblia, dijo: «Tengo sed».
29 Había allí un jarro lleno de vinagre. Entonces empaparon una esponja en el vinagre, la ataron a una rama, y la acercaron a la boca de Jesús. 30 Él probó el vinagre y dijo: «Todo está cumplido». Luego, inclinó su cabeza y murió.
La lanza en el costado de Jesús
31 Era viernes, y al día siguiente sería la fiesta de la Pascua. Los jefes judíos no querían que en el día sábado los tres hombres siguieran colgados en las cruces, porque ese sería un sábado muy especial. Por eso le pidieron a Pilato ordenar que se les quebraran las piernas a los tres hombres. Así los harían morir más rápido y podrían quitar los cuerpos.
32 Los soldados fueron y les quebraron las piernas a los dos que habían sido clavados junto a Jesús. 33 Cuando llegaron a Jesús, se dieron cuenta de que ya había muerto. Por eso no le quebraron las piernas.
34 Sin embargo, uno de los soldados atravesó con una lanza el costado de Jesús, y enseguida salió sangre y agua.
35-37 Todo esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que dice la Biblia: «No le quebrarán ningún hueso». En otra parte, la Biblia también dice: «Mirarán al que atravesaron con una lanza».
El que dice esto, también vio lo que pasó, y sabe que todo esto es cierto. Él cuenta la verdad para que ustedes crean.
Jesús es sepultado
(Mt 27.57—28.10Mc 15.42—16.8Lc 23.50—24.12)38 Después de esto José, de la ciudad de Arimatea, le pidió permiso a Pilato para llevarse el cuerpo de Jesús. José era seguidor de Jesús, pero no se lo había dicho a nadie porque tenía miedo de los líderes judíos. Pilato le dio permiso, y José se llevó el cuerpo.
39 También Nicodemo, el que una noche había ido a hablar con Jesús, llegó con unos treinta kilos de perfume a donde estaba José. 40 Los dos tomaron el cuerpo de Jesús, y lo envolvieron en vendas de una tela muy cara. Luego empaparon las vendas con el perfume que había llevado Nicodemo. Los judíos acostumbraban sepultar así a los muertos.
41 En el lugar donde Jesús murió había un jardín con una tumba nueva. Allí no habían puesto a nadie todavía. 42 Como ya iba a empezar el sábado, que era el día de descanso obligatorio para los judíos, pusieron allí el cuerpo de Jesús en esa tumba, porque era la más cercana.
1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him . 2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, 3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. 4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. 5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! 6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him , crucify him . Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him : for I find no fault in him. 7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
8 ¶ When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; 9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? 11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. 12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cæsar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar.
13 ¶ When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! 15 But they cried out, Away with him , away with him , crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cæsar. 16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. 17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: 18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
19 ¶ And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
23 ¶ Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
25 ¶ Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
28 ¶ After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. 31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. 37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
38 ¶ And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. 39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight . 40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. 42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day ; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
