Discurso de Pablo ante el rey Agripa
1 El rey Agripa le dijo a Pablo:
—Puedes hablar para defenderte.
Pablo levantó su mano en alto y dijo:
2 —Me alegra poder hablar hoy delante de Su Majestad, el rey Agripa. Estoy contento porque podré defenderme de todas las acusaciones que hacen contra mí esos judíos. 3 Yo sé que Su Majestad conoce bien las costumbres judías, y sabe también acerca de las cosas que discutimos. Por eso le pido ahora que me escuche con paciencia.
4 »Todos los judíos me conocen desde que yo era niño. Saben cómo he vivido en mi país y en Jerusalén. 5 Siempre he sido un fariseo. Si ellos quisieran, podrían asegurarlo, pues lo saben.
»Los fariseos somos el grupo más exigente de nuestra religión. 6 Ahora me están juzgando aquí, solo porque creo en la promesa que Dios les hizo a nuestros antepasados. 7 Nuestras doce tribus de Israel esperan que Dios cumpla esa promesa. Por eso aman y adoran a Dios día y noche. Gran rey Agripa, los judíos que me acusan no creen en esa promesa. 8 ¿Por qué ninguno de ustedes cree que Dios puede hacer que los muertos vuelvan a vivir?
9 »Antes, yo pensaba que debía hacer todo lo posible por destruir a los que creían en Jesús de Nazaret. 10 Eso hice en la ciudad de Jerusalén. Con el permiso de los sacerdotes principales, metí en la cárcel a muchos de los que creían en él. Cuando los mataban, yo estaba de acuerdo. 11 Muchas veces los castigué en las sinagogas, para que dejaran de creer en Jesús. Tanto los odiaba que hasta los perseguí en otras ciudades.
12 »Para eso mismo fui a la ciudad de Damasco, con el permiso y la autorización de los sacerdotes principales. 13 Pero en el camino, gran rey Agripa, cuando eran las doce del día, vi una luz muy fuerte, que brilló alrededor de todos los que íbamos. 14 Todos caímos al suelo. Luego oí una voz que venía del cielo, y que me dijo en arameo: “Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues? ¡Solo los tontos pelean contra mí!”
15 »Entonces respondí: “¿Quién eres, Señor?”
»Él me contestó: “Yo soy Jesús. Es a mí a quien estás persiguiendo. 16 Levántate, porque me he aparecido ante ti para nombrarte como uno de mis servidores. Quiero que anuncies lo que ahora sabes de mí, y también lo que sabrás después. 17 Te enviaré a hablar con los judíos y con los que no son judíos, y no dejaré que ninguno de ellos te haga daño. 18 Quiero que hables con ellos, para que se den cuenta de todo lo malo que hacen, y para que comiencen a obedecer a Dios. Ellos ahora caminan como si estuvieran ciegos, pero tú les abrirás los ojos. Así dejarán de obedecer a Satanás, y obedecerán a Dios. Podrán creer en mí, y Dios les perdonará sus pecados. Así serán parte del santo pueblo de Dios.”
19 »Gran rey Agripa, yo no desobedecí esa visión que Dios puso ante mí. 20 Por eso, primero anuncié el mensaje a la gente de Damasco, y luego a la de Jerusalén, y a la de toda la región de Judea. También hablé con los que no eran judíos, y les dije que debían pedirle perdón a Dios y obedecerlo, y hacer lo bueno para demostrar que en verdad se habían arrepentido.
21 »¡Por eso algunos judíos me tomaron prisionero en el templo, y quisieron matarme! 22 Pero todavía sigo hablando de Jesús a todo el mundo, a ricos y a pobres, pues Dios me ayuda y me da fuerzas para seguir adelante. Siempre les hablo de lo que la Biblia ha dicho de todo esto: 23 que el Mesías tenía que morir, pero que después de tres días resucitaría, y que sería como una luz en la oscuridad, para salvar a los judíos y a los no judíos.
Agripa le responde a Pablo
24 Cuando Pablo terminó de defenderse, Festo le gritó:
—¡Pablo, estás loco! De tanto estudiar te has vuelto loco.
25 Pablo contestó:
—Excelentísimo Festo, yo no estoy loco. Lo que he dicho es la verdad, y no una locura. 26 El rey Agripa sabe mucho acerca de todo esto, y por eso hablo con tanta confianza delante de él. Estoy seguro de que él sabe todo esto, porque no se trata de cosas que hayan pasado en secreto.
27 Luego, Pablo se dirigió al rey Agripa y le dijo:
—Majestad, ¿acepta usted lo que dijeron los profetas en la Biblia? Yo sé que sí lo acepta.
28 Agripa le contestó:
—¿En tan poco tiempo piensas que puedes convencerme de ser cristiano?
29 Pablo le dijo:
—Me gustaría que en poco tiempo, o en mucho tiempo, Su Majestad y todos los que están aquí fueran como yo. Pero claro, sin estas cadenas.
30 Entonces el rey Agripa, Festo y Berenice, y todos los que estaban allí, se levantaron 31 y salieron para conversar a solas. Decían: «Este hombre no ha hecho nada malo como para merecer la muerte. Tampoco debería estar en la cárcel.»
32 Agripa le dijo a Festo:
—Este hombre podría ser puesto en libertad, si no hubiera pedido que el emperador lo juzgue.
1 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself: 2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews: 3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently. 4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; 5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: 7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope’s sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. 8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? 9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them . 11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities. 12 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, 13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. 14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. 16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, 18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. 19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: 20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judæa, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. 21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me . 22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: 23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
24 And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad. 25 But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. 26 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest. 28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. 29 And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds. 30 And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: 31 And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds. 32 Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Cæsar.
