Moisés y Aarón hablan con el rey de Egipto
1 Después de hablar con los israelitas, Moisés y Aarón fueron a ver al rey de Egipto y le dijeron:
—El Dios de los israelitas, envía este mensaje a Su Majestad: “Deja que mi pueblo Israel vaya al desierto, para que haga allí una fiesta en mi honor”.
2 Pero el rey contestó:
—¿Y quién es ese Dios? ¿Por qué tendría yo que obedecerlo? ¡No conozco a ningún Dios de los israelitas, ni tampoco voy a dejar que ustedes se vayan!
3 Moisés y Aarón le dijeron:
—Pues él es nuestro Dios y ha venido a ayudarnos. Tenemos que ir al desierto, hasta donde lleguemos en tres días, y presentarle allí nuestras ofrendas. Si no lo hacemos así, tal vez nos castigue con alguna enfermedad, o nos haga morir en la guerra.
4-5 Pero el rey les contestó:
—¡Mejor vayan a trabajar! ¡Miren a cuánta gente están distrayendo!
6 Ese mismo día el rey les ordenó a los capataces y a los jefes de trabajo:
7 «Ya no les den paja a los israelitas para los ladrillos que tienen que hacer. Déjenlos que vayan ellos a recogerla. 8 Pero exíjanles que hagan la misma cantidad de ladrillos; ¡ni uno menos! Estos israelitas son unos haraganes; por eso andan gritando que los dejemos ir al desierto para adorar a su Dios. 9 Ustedes háganlos trabajar más todavía. Manténgalos tan ocupados que no tengan tiempo de creer en las mentiras de Moisés y de Aarón».
10 Los capataces y los jefes de trabajo fueron a decirles a los israelitas:
«El rey de Egipto nos manda a decirles que ya no vamos a darles paja para los ladrillos, 11 sino que ustedes tienen que ir a buscarla y recogerla donde puedan. Pero deben entregar la misma cantidad de ladrillos de siempre».
Los israelitas se quejan ante el rey de Egipto
12 Los israelitas recorrieron todo Egipto en busca de hierba seca, para usarla en lugar de la paja que antes les daban. 13 Los capataces les decían: «¡Apúrense! Cada día tienen que entregar la misma cantidad de ladrillos que hacían cuando se les daba paja».
14 Pero como no podían hacerlo, los capataces golpeaban a los jefes israelitas que habían puesto para vigilar el trabajo. Les decían: «Ya van tres días que no han entregado la misma cantidad de ladrillos».
15 Entonces los jefes israelitas fueron a quejarse ante el rey. Le dijeron:
—¿Por qué nos trata así Su Majestad? 16 Su gente no solo nos exige que hagamos ladrillos, sino que ni siquiera nos da paja, y para colmo nos golpea. Si no estamos entregando la misma cantidad de ladrillos, es por culpa de ellos.
17 Pero él les contestó:
—¡Haraganes! ¡Son unos haraganes! Me piden que los deje ir a adorar a su Dios, pero lo que quieren es dejar de trabajar. 18 Así que regresen a su trabajo. Y aunque no voy a darles paja, ustedes deberán entregar la misma cantidad de ladrillos.
19 Esta respuesta del rey significaba un gran problema para los jefes israelitas, 20 así que cuando se encontraron con Moisés y Aarón, que estaban esperándolos afuera, 21 les dijeron:
—¡Que Dios los castigue por el mal que nos han hecho! Ahora el rey y su gente nos odian más que antes. ¡Ustedes les han dado un pretexto para que nos maten!
22 Entonces Moisés le reclamó a Dios:
—Dios mío, ¿para esto me enviaste? ¿Solo para hacer sufrir a tu pueblo? 23 Desde que vine a Egipto y le di al rey tu mensaje, él no ha dejado de maltratar a tu pueblo; sin embargo, tú todavía no nos has liberado.
1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. 2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.
3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days’ journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword. 4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens. 5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens. 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying, 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God. 9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.
10 ¶ And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw. 11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished. 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. 13 And the taskmasters hasted them , saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw. 14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?
15 ¶ Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants? 16 There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people. 17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD. 18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks. 19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case , after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.
20 ¶ And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh: 21 And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us. 22 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me? 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.
