Muerte de Saúl y de sus hijos
(1 S 31.1-13)1 Los filisteos lucharon contra los israelitas y los hicieron huir. A muchos de ellos los mataron en el cerro de Guilboa, 2 y a Saúl y a sus hijos los persiguieron hasta matarlos. Así murieron Jonatán, Abinadab y Malquisúa. 3 Luego los filisteos concentraron sus fuerzas en el ataque a Saúl, y sus arqueros lograron herirlo de muerte. 4 Entonces Saúl le dijo a su escudero:
—Saca tu espada y mátame. Hazlo antes de que vengan esos extranjeros idólatras. De lo contrario, se burlarán de mí y me rematarán.
Pero su escudero tenía tanto miedo que no se atrevió a matarlo. Entonces Saúl tomó su espada y se echó sobre ella.
5 Al ver muerto a Saúl, también el escudero se echó sobre su espada y se mató. 6 Así fue como Saúl, sus tres hijos, y toda su familia murieron el mismo día.
7 Cuando los israelitas del otro lado del valle vieron que el ejército de Israel había huido, y que Saúl y sus hijos estaban muertos, también ellos huyeron y abandonaron sus ciudades. Entonces llegaron los filisteos y ocuparon esas ciudades.
8 Al otro día, mientras los filisteos les quitaban a los israelitas muertos sus objetos de valor, encontraron muertos en el cerro de Guilboa a Saúl y a sus tres hijos. 9 Entonces a Saúl le cortaron la cabeza y le quitaron su armadura, y enviaron mensajeros a su país para que dieran la noticia en los templos de sus dioses y entre todos los filisteos. 10 Más tarde, pusieron la armadura de Saúl en el templo de sus dioses, y su cabeza la colgaron en el templo de Dagón.
11 Los israelitas que vivían en Jabés de Galaad supieron lo que los filisteos habían hecho con Saúl. 12 Entonces un grupo de valientes fue y quitó de la muralla los cadáveres de Saúl y de sus hijos. Se los llevaron a Jabés, y allí tomaron sus huesos y los enterraron bajo un árbol. Después ayunaron por siete días en señal de luto.
13-14 Así fue como Dios le quitó la vida a Saúl, porque no obedeció sus mandamientos y porque fue a consultar a una adivina en vez de consultarlo a él. Por eso Dios hizo rey a David, hijo de Jesé.
1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa. 2 And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. 3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him, and he was wounded of the archers. 4 Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. 5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died. 6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together. 7 And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 ¶ And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa. 9 And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people. 10 And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.
11 ¶ And when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
13 ¶ So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; 14 And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.
