Jonás obedece a Dios
1 Dios volvió a hablarle a Jonás, y le dio esta orden: 2 «¡Levántate, ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive! Anúnciales el mensaje que voy a darte».
3 Esta vez Jonás sí obedeció a Dios: se levantó y se fue a Nínive. Aquella ciudad era tan grande que para recorrerla toda se necesitaban tres días completos.
4 Jonás entró en la ciudad, y durante todo un día estuvo anunciando: «¡Dentro de cuarenta días Dios va a destruir esta ciudad!»
5 Entonces toda la gente de Nínive dejó de hacer lo malo y decidió obedecer solo a Dios. Y como querían demostrar que deseaban cambiar su manera de vivir, se pusieron ropa de tela áspera y ayunaron. Todos ellos, desde el más rico hasta el más pobre, no comieron nada ese día.
6 Cuando el rey de Nínive supo esto, se levantó de su trono. Luego se quitó sus ropas finas, se puso ropas ásperas, y se sentó en el suelo. Todo esto lo hizo en señal de humildad ante Dios. 7 De inmediato el rey envió un anuncio a toda la gente de Nínive:
«Esta es una orden del rey y de sus ministros: Que nadie coma nada. Se prohíbe que la gente, las vacas y las ovejas coman o beban. 8 Todo el mundo está obligado a ponerse ropas ásperas, y deberán cubrir los animales con mantas ásperas.
»Además, les pedimos a todos ustedes que oren a Dios con todas sus fuerzas, que dejen de hacer lo malo, y que ya no se peleen ni maltraten a nadie. 9 Si dejamos de hacer lo malo, tal vez a Dios se le pase el enojo, y no nos destruirá».
10 Y al ver que toda la gente de Nínive dejó de hacer lo malo, Dios decidió no destruirlos.
1 And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, 2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. 3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey. 4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
5 ¶ So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. 6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. 9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
10 ¶ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
