Dios saca agua de una roca
1 Los israelitas se fueron del desierto de Sin, y se detenían en cada lugar que Dios les ordenaba. Al llegar a un lugar llamado Refidim, acamparon pero no encontraron agua, 2 así que le reclamaron a Moisés:
—¡Tenemos sed! ¡Danos agua!
Moisés les contestó:
—¿Y por qué me reclaman a mí? ¿Por qué dudan del poder de Dios?
3 Pero era tanta la sed que tenían, que comenzaron a criticar a Moisés. Le dijeron:
—¿Para esto nos sacaste de Egipto? ¿Para matarnos de sed, junto con nuestros hijos y nuestros animales?
4 Entonces Moisés le pidió ayuda a Dios, y le dijo:
—¿Qué voy a hacer con esta gente? ¡Poco les falta para matarme a pedradas!
5-6 Dios le contestó:
—Quiero que lleves a los israelitas hasta la montaña de Horeb. Allí estaré esperándote, sobre la roca. Tú adelántate, y llévate a algunos de los jefes del pueblo. Llévate también la vara con la que convertiste en sangre el agua del río Nilo. Cuando llegues allá, golpea la roca con la vara. Así saldrá agua de la roca, y todos podrán beber.
Moisés hizo todo esto en presencia de los jefes del pueblo. 7 A ese lugar le puso por nombre Meribá, que significa «reclamo», pues el pueblo le había reclamado a Dios. También lo llamó Masá, que quiere decir «duda», porque habían dudado del poder de Dios para cuidarlos.
Los israelitas pelean contra los amalecitas
8 Los amalecitas salieron a pelear contra los israelitas. La batalla tuvo lugar en Refidim. 9 Allí Moisés le dijo a Josué: «Elige a algunos hombres, y sal a pelear contra los amalecitas. Mañana yo estaré en lo alto del cerro, sosteniendo en la mano la vara que Dios me dio para castigar a los egipcios».
10 Josué siguió las órdenes de Moisés y salió a pelear contra los amalecitas. Por su parte, Moisés, Aarón y Hur subieron a la parte más alta del cerro. 11 Mientras Moisés levantaba el brazo, los israelitas les ganaban la batalla a los amalecitas, pero cuando lo bajaba, los amalecitas les ganaban a los israelitas. 12 Y Moisés comenzó a cansarse de mantener su brazo en alto, así que Aarón y Hur le pusieron una piedra para que se sentara, y se colocaron uno a cada lado para sostener en alto los brazos de Moisés. Así lo hicieron hasta el atardecer, 13 y de ese modo Josué pudo vencer a los amalecitas.
14 Más tarde, Dios le dijo a Moisés: «Escribe en un libro todo lo ocurrido en esta batalla, para que nadie lo olvide. Y dile a Josué que yo haré que nadie vuelva a acordarse de los amalecitas».
15 Allí Moisés construyó un altar, y lo llamó «Dios es mi bandera», 16 pues dijo:
«¡Tengo en la mano
la bandera de nuestro Dios!
¡Dios les ha declarado la guerra
a los amalecitas
y a todos sus descendientes!»
1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD? 3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? 4 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me. 5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?
8 ¶ Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. 14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. 15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi: 16 For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
