Los siete servidores
1 Cada vez había más y más seguidores de Jesús, y comenzó a haber problemas entre los seguidores judíos que hablaban griego y los que hablaban arameo. Y es que los que hablaban griego decían que las viudas de su grupo no recibían suficiente ayuda para sus necesidades de cada día.
2 Entonces los apóstoles llamaron a todos a una reunión, y allí dijeron:
—Nuestro deber principal es anunciar el mensaje de Dios, así que no está bien que nos dediquemos a repartir el dinero y la comida. 3 Elijan con cuidado a siete hombres, para que se encarguen de ese trabajo. Tienen que ser personas en las que todos ustedes confíen, que hagan lo bueno y sean muy sabios, y que tengan el poder del Espíritu Santo. 4 Nosotros nos dedicaremos entonces a servir a Dios por medio de la oración, y a anunciar el mensaje de salvación.
5 A todo el grupo le pareció buena la idea, y eligieron a Esteban, un hombre que confiaba mucho en Dios y que tenía el poder del Espíritu Santo. También eligieron a otros seis: Felipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timón, Pármenas y Nicolás. Este Nicolás era de la región de Antioquía, y antes se había convertido a la religión judía. 6 Luego los llevaron ante los apóstoles, y estos pusieron sus manos sobre la cabeza de cada uno y oraron.
7 Los apóstoles siguieron anunciando el mensaje de Dios. Por eso, más y más personas se convirtieron en seguidores de Jesús, y muchos sacerdotes judíos también creyeron en él.
Arresto de Esteban
8 Dios le dio a un joven llamado Esteban un poder especial para hacer milagros y señales maravillosas entre la gente. 9 Sin embargo, algunos judíos del pueblo de Cirene se pusieron a discutir con él, junto con otros judíos de la ciudad de Alejandría, que pertenecían a la Sinagoga de los Hombres Libres. También discutieron con Esteban otros que venían de la región de Cilicia y de la provincia de Asia, 10 pero ninguno de ellos pudo vencerlo, porque él hablaba con la sabiduría que le daba el Espíritu Santo. 11 Entonces aquellos judíos les dieron dinero a otros para que mintieran. Tenían que decir: «Esteban ha insultado a Dios y a nuestro antepasado Moisés. Nosotros mismos lo hemos oído.»
12 Fue así como alborotaron al pueblo, a los líderes del país y a los maestros de la Ley. Luego apresaron a Esteban. Lo llevaron ante la Junta Suprema, 13 y llamaron a algunos hombres para que dijeran más mentiras. Uno de ellos dijo: «Este hombre anda diciendo cosas terribles contra el santo templo y contra la Ley de Moisés. 14 Lo hemos oído decir que Jesús de Nazaret destruirá el templo, y que cambiará las costumbres que Moisés nos enseñó.»
15 Cuando todos los de la Junta Suprema se fijaron en Esteban, vieron que su cara parecía la de un ángel.
1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them , and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
5 ¶ And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. 8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
9 ¶ Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. 10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. 11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God. 12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him , and caught him, and brought him to the council, 13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: 14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us. 15 And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
