Un plan maravilloso
1-2 Dios me habló otra vez cuando el rey Sedequías me tenía preso en el patio de la guardia de su palacio. Fue en el tiempo en que el ejército babilonio tenía rodeada a la ciudad de Jerusalén. Para entonces Sedequías llevaba diez años de reinar en Judá, y Nabucodonosor llevaba dieciocho años como rey de Babilonia. 3-5 El rey Sedequías ordenó que me encarcelaran porque yo anuncié un mensaje de parte de Dios. Este fue el mensaje:
«Yo, el Dios de Israel, voy a dejar que el rey de Babilonia conquiste la ciudad de Jerusalén. Ni siquiera Sedequías podrá escapar del poder de los babilonios. Ahora es rey, pero será derrotado por el rey de Babilonia. Será llevado preso, y en ese país se quedará hasta que yo decida otra cosa. Si ustedes quieren pelear contra los babilonios, háganlo; pero saldrán derrotados. Juro que así será».
6 Yo dejé en claro que Dios habló conmigo, 7-8 y que me dijo que mi primo Hanamel vendría a ofrecerme un terreno, para que yo se lo comprara. Hanamel era hijo de mi tío Salum, y su terreno estaba en Anatot, en el territorio de Benjamín. Y así fue. Hanamel vino al patio de la guardia, donde yo estaba preso, y me dijo que yo tenía el derecho y la responsabilidad de comprárselo para que el terreno quedara en familia. Con eso quedaba demostrado que Dios había hablado conmigo. 9 Entonces le compré a mi primo el terreno, y le pagué por él diecisiete monedas de plata.
10 Llamé a unos testigos, y delante de ellos le pagué y firmé la escritura del terreno.
11 Se hicieron dos copias de este documento, y en las dos copias se explicaban las condiciones de compraventa; una de ellas quedó sellada, y la otra quedó abierta. 12 Yo le entregué las dos copias a Baruc, que era hijo de Nerías y nieto de Maaseías. Esto lo hice delante de mi primo Hanamel, de los testigos que habían firmado la escritura, y de toda la gente de Judá que estaba sentada en el patio de la guardia. 13 También delante de ellos le dije a Baruc:
14 «El Dios todopoderoso te ordena recibir esta escritura, tanto la copia sellada como la copia abierta. Guárdalas en una vasija de barro, para que no se echen a perder. 15 Dios nos promete que en este país volveremos a comprar casas, terrenos y viñedos».
16 Después de entregarle a Baruc la escritura, le pedí a Dios en oración:
17 «Dios de Israel, tú, con tu extraordinario poder, has creado el cielo y la tierra. ¡No hay nada que tú no puedas hacer! 18 Demuestras tu gran amor a miles de personas, pero también castigas a los hijos por el pecado de sus padres. ¡Tú eres grande y poderoso! ¡Por eso te llaman Dios del universo! 19 Tus planes son maravillosos, pero aún más maravilloso es todo lo que haces. Tú estás al tanto de todo lo que hacemos, y a cada uno nos das lo que merecen nuestras acciones.
20 »Todos saben de los milagros que hiciste en Egipto, y de los que sigues haciendo en todo el mundo. 21 Tú nos sacaste de Egipto con gran poder, por medio de milagros que a todos llenaron de miedo. 22 Tú nos diste este país muy fértil, donde siempre hay abundancia de alimentos, tal como se lo habías prometido a nuestros antepasados.
23 »Pero cuando nuestros antepasados llegaron para habitar este país, no te obedecieron ni tuvieron en cuenta tus enseñanzas. ¡No cumplieron con lo que tú les mandaste hacer, y por eso los castigaste con esta desgracia! 24 Los ejércitos de Babilonia están listos para atacar a Jerusalén, y nuestra ciudad será conquistada por medio de la guerra, el hambre y las enfermedades.
»Dios de Israel, ¡tú mismo puedes ver cómo se cumple ahora todo lo que habías anunciado! 25 Si la ciudad está a punto de caer en manos de los babilonios, ¡para qué me ordenaste comprar un terreno delante de testigos!»
26 Entonces Dios me explicó:
27 «Jeremías, yo soy el Dios de Israel y de todo el mundo. No hay absolutamente nada que yo no pueda hacer. 28 Tienes razón, voy a permitir que el rey de Babilonia y sus soldados se apoderen de Jerusalén. 29 El ejército babilonio atacará a Jerusalén, y les prenderá fuego a todas esas casas donde se quemaba incienso para adorar al dios Baal, y donde se presentaban ofrendas de vino en honor de los dioses falsos. Todo eso lo hacían para ofenderme. 30 Siempre, desde que comenzaron a existir como nación, el pueblo de Israel y el de Judá han hecho lo que les da la gana.
»A mí me molesta mucho que adoren a esos ídolos. ¡Son dioses que ellos mismos han fabricado! 31-32 Por eso voy a destruir a Jerusalén, pues desde que la construyeron, los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén no han dejado de ofenderme con su conducta. También los pueblos de Israel y de Judá, y sus reyes, jefes, sacerdotes y profetas, no han hecho más que ofenderme y hacerme enojar. 33 Por más que yo traté de enseñarles y corregirlos, ellos no me escucharon ni me prestaron atención; en vez de seguirme, se alejaron de mí. 34 Para colmo, ¡en mi propio templo colocaron sus asquerosos ídolos! ¡Eso no lo puedo aceptar! 35 También construyeron altares en el valle de Ben-hinom, para adorar a Baal. Pero lo que más aborrezco es que en esos altares ofrecieron a sus hijos y a sus hijas en honor del dios Moloc. Yo jamás les ordené que hicieran eso, ¡y ni siquiera me pasó por la mente! Así fue como hicieron pecar a los habitantes de Judá.
36 »Por eso yo, el Dios de Israel, te digo que lo que has anunciado es verdad: la ciudad de Jerusalén caerá en manos del rey de Babilonia por causa de la guerra, el hambre y la enfermedad. 37 Yo estoy muy enojado con mi pueblo, y por eso lo he dispersado por muchos países. Pero en el futuro volveré a reunirlos, haré que vuelvan a Jerusalén, y entonces vivirán tranquilos y seguros. 38 Ellos serán mi pueblo, y yo seré su Dios. 39 Haré que tengan buenos pensamientos, y que cambien de conducta. Así me respetarán siempre, y eso será provechoso para ellos y para sus hijos. 40 Haré con ellos un pacto que durará para siempre. Estaré con mi pueblo en todo momento, y lo ayudaré; haré que me respete, y que no vuelva a alejarse de mí. 41 Con todo mi corazón volveré a establecerlo en esta tierra, y mi mayor alegría será que mi pueblo esté bien.
42 »Yo, el Dios de Israel, declaro: Así como le di a mi pueblo este castigo, también le daré todo lo bueno que le he prometido. 43 Ahora mi pueblo dice que esta tierra es un desierto, y que no tiene gente ni animales porque yo la puse en manos de los babilonios. Pero yo les aseguro a todos que volverán a comprar terrenos en este país. 44 Sí, volverán a comprar propiedades y firmarán y sellarán las escrituras delante de testigos. Esas compras las harán en el territorio de Benjamín y en los pueblos cercanos a Jerusalén, en las ciudades de Judá y en las ciudades de la región montañosa, y también en las ciudades de la llanura y en el desierto. Les juro que los haré volver de Babilonia».
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. 2 For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house. 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; 4 And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes; 5 And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith the LORD: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper.
6 ¶ And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 7 Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it . 8 So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. 9 And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver. 10 And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it , and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances. 11 So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open: 12 And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle’s son , and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison.
13 ¶ And I charged Baruch before them, saying, 14 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days. 15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.
16 ¶ Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, saying, 17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee: 18 Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name, 19 Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings: 20 Which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in Israel, and among other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day; 21 And hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror; 22 And hast given them this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey; 23 And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them: 24 Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it . 25 And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
26 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, 27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me? 28 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it: 29 And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger. 30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD. 31 For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face, 32 Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 33 And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them , yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction. 34 But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it. 35 And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.
36 ¶ And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; 37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: 38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: 39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. 41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul. 42 For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them. 43 And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. 44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them , and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.
