Casamiento de Sansón
1 Sansón fue al pueblo de Timná, y al ver a una joven filistea se enamoró de ella. 2 Cuando volvió, le dijo a sus padres:
—He visto en Timná a una joven filistea, y quiero casarme con ella. Hagan ustedes los arreglos necesarios para la boda.
3 Sus padres, entonces, le preguntaron:
—¿Por qué tienes que elegir como esposa a una mujer de esos filisteos, que no conocen a Dios? ¿Es que no hay mujeres en nuestro pueblo o entre los demás pueblos israelitas?
Pero Sansón insistió:
—Esa muchacha es la que me gusta. Vayan a pedirla para que sea mi esposa.
4 Sus padres no sabían que Dios había dispuesto que esto fuera así, porque buscaba una oportunidad para atacar a los filisteos. En esa época los israelitas estaban bajo el poder de los filisteos, 5 así que Sansón y sus padres se fueron a Timná.
Cuando Sansón pasaba por los viñedos, de pronto se oyó un rugido, y un feroz león lo atacó. 6 Pero el espíritu de Dios actuó sobre Sansón y le dio una gran fuerza. Entonces Sansón tomó al león entre sus manos y lo despedazó como si fuera un cabrito. Pero no les dijo a sus padres lo que había sucedido. 7 Poco después llegaron a Timná, y Sansón fue a hablar con la muchacha de la que estaba enamorado. 8 Unos días más tarde, cuando Sansón volvió para casarse, se apartó del camino para ver al león muerto, y resultó que en el cuerpo del león había un enjambre de abejas y un panal de miel. 9 Sansón tomó la miel con las manos y se fue por el camino comiéndola. Al llegar a donde estaban sus padres, les dio miel, y ellos comieron; pero no les dijo de dónde la había sacado.
10 Su padre fue a la casa de la joven, y Sansón hizo allí una fiesta, porque esa era la costumbre entre los jóvenes. 11 Cuando lo vieron los filisteos, le llevaron treinta muchachos para hacerle compañía. 12 Sansón les dijo a los jóvenes:
—Les voy a decir una adivinanza. Si me dan la respuesta dentro de los siete días que va a durar la fiesta, les daré a cada uno de ustedes una capa de tela fina y un conjunto completo de ropa de fiesta. 13 Pero si no la adivinan, cada uno de ustedes me tendrá que dar a mí una capa de tela fina y un conjunto completo de ropa de fiesta.
Los jóvenes contestaron:
—¡Dinos la adivinanza! ¡Queremos oírla!
14 Entonces Sansón les dijo:
«Del devorador salió comida,
y del fuerte salió dulzura».
Pasaron tres días, y los jóvenes no daban con la respuesta. 15 Al cuarto día, le dijeron a la prometida de Sansón:
«Averíguanos la solución de la adivinanza. Haz que tu prometido te la diga porque, si no, te quemaremos a ti y a toda tu familia. ¿Acaso pretenden dejarnos desnudos?»
16 Ella fue a ver a Sansón, y llorando le dijo:
—¡Tú no me quieres! ¡Me desprecias! A mis amigos les contaste una adivinanza, pero a mí no me has dicho la respuesta.
Sansón le respondió:
—¡Pero, mujer! Si ni a mis padres se la he dicho, ¿por qué tengo que decírtela a ti?
17 Ella estuvo llorándole el resto de la semana. Y tanto insistió que el último día Sansón le dio la respuesta. Entonces ella se la dio a conocer a los jóvenes. 18 El séptimo día, antes de que se pusiera el sol, los filisteos fueron a decirle a Sansón:
«No hay nada más dulce que la miel,
y nada más fuerte que un león».
Él les contestó:
«Gracias a mi prometida
supieron la respuesta».
19 Enseguida el espíritu de Dios le dio mucha fuerza a Sansón. Entonces él se fue a Ascalón, y allí mató a treinta hombres. Les quitó sus ropas y se las dio a los que habían averiguado la respuesta. Después, regresó a la casa de sus padres, pues estaba muy furioso por lo que había sucedido. 20 En cuanto a la prometida de Sansón, su padre la casó con uno de los invitados a la fiesta.
1 And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife. 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well. 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
5 ¶ Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him. 6 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done. 7 And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well.
8 ¶ And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion. 9 And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion.
10 ¶ So his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do. 11 And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
12 ¶ And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments: 13 But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it. 14 And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle. 15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson’s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so ? 16 And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee? 17 And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people. 18 And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.
19 ¶ And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house. 20 But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.
