Nehemías hace cambios
1 Cierto día, mientras el libro de la Ley de Moisés se leía ante todo el pueblo, nos dimos cuenta de que había una ley que decía así: «Jamás se permitirá que los amonitas y los moabitas formen parte del pueblo de Dios».
2 La razón de esta ley era que, en cierta ocasión, esa gente no les dio a los israelitas el pan y el agua que necesitaban, y en cambio le pagó a Balaam para que los maldijera. Pero nuestro Dios hizo que sus malos deseos resultaran en algo bueno. 3 Así que, cuando la gente oyó lo que decía el libro de la Ley, expulsaron de Israel a todos los que se habían mezclado con extranjeros.
4-5 Tiempo atrás, el sacerdote Eliasib era el jefe de las bodegas del templo de nuestro Dios. Como Tobías el amonita era pariente suyo, Eliasib le había dado permiso para vivir en una habitación grande. Allí se guardaban las ofrendas de cereales, el incienso, los utensilios y los diezmos de trigo, vino y aceite. Todo esto era para los sacerdotes, sus ayudantes, los cantores y los vigilantes de las entradas. 6 Cuando Eliasib hizo esto, yo no estaba en Jerusalén, porque en el año treinta y dos del reinado de Artajerjes, había ido a Babilonia para presentarme ante él. Tiempo después, con el permiso del rey, 7 volví a Jerusalén y descubrí que Eliasib había hecho muy mal en darle a ese amonita una habitación en el templo de Dios. 8 Me enojé mucho, y ordené que sacaran todos los muebles de Tobías, 9 y mandé que purificaran el lugar. Después di instrucciones para que volvieran a colocar allí los utensilios del templo de Dios, los cereales y el incienso.
10 También me enteré de que a los ayudantes de los sacerdotes no se les habían dado sus alimentos, por lo que ellos y los cantores habían tenido que irse a sus propios campos. 11 Entonces reprendí a las autoridades por haber descuidado el templo de Dios, y mandé llamar a los ayudantes de los sacerdotes y cantores. Los volví a colocar en sus puestos, 12 y todos los de Judá trajeron a las bodegas del templo los diezmos de trigo, vino y aceite. 13 Después puse al sacerdote Selemías, al secretario Sadoc y al ayudante Pedaías como jefes de las bodegas, y nombré como ayudante de ellos a Hanán hijo de Zacur, nieto de Matanías. Eran hombres de confianza, y se encargarían de hacer una buena distribución de las provisiones a sus compañeros.
14 Luego de hacer eso, le dije a Dios: «¡Dios mío, toma en cuenta esto que acabo de hacer, y no te olvides de todo lo bueno que he hecho por tu templo y por el culto!»
15 En ese tiempo vi que en Judá, los sábados, algunos hacían vino y llevaban manojos de trigo sobre los burros. También cargaban vino, racimos de uvas, higos y toda clase de cargas, y todo eso lo traían a Jerusalén para venderlo. Entonces los reprendí por eso. 16 Además, algunos de Tiro que vivían en la ciudad, llevaban pescado y toda clase de productos a Jerusalén, para vendérselos a la gente de Judá los días sábados. 17 Entonces reprendí así a los jefes de Judá:
«¡Está muy mal lo que hacen! ¡No están respetando el día sábado! 18 Acuérdense de que cuando sus antepasados hicieron lo mismo, Dios nos castigó a nosotros y también a esta ciudad. Si ustedes no descansan y adoran a Dios el día sábado, él nos castigará aún más».
19 Entonces ordené que los portones de Jerusalén se cerraran en cuanto empezara a anochecer el viernes, y que no se abrieran hasta el anochecer del sábado. Puse a algunos de mis ayudantes para que vigilaran las entradas y no dejaran entrar ninguna carga en día sábado. 20 Una o dos veces, algunos comerciantes y vendedores pasaron la noche fuera de Jerusalén. 21 Yo discutí con ellos y les advertí que, si volvían a pasar la noche junto al muro, los sacaría de allí por la fuerza. Desde entonces no volvieron a presentarse en día sábado. 22 Luego ordené a los ayudantes de los sacerdotes que se purificaran, y fueran a vigilar las entradas para que se respetara el día sábado. Entonces le dije a Dios: «¡Dios mío, tampoco olvides esto que he hecho! Ya que eres tan bueno, ¡ten compasión de mí!»
23 En ese tiempo vi también que algunos judíos se habían casado con mujeres de países como Asdod, Amón y Moab. 24 La mitad de sus hijos hablaban el idioma de Asdod y de otros países, pero no conocían el idioma de los judíos. 25 Discutí con esos hombres y los maldije. A algunos les di de golpes, les arranqué el cabello y los obligué a prometer, en nombre de Dios, que ni ellos ni sus hijos o hijas se casarían con extranjeros. 26 Además, les recordé:
«Ustedes han cometido el mismo pecado que cometió Salomón. Entre muchas naciones no hubo un rey como él. Dios lo amó y lo puso como rey sobre Israel, pero fueron sus esposas extranjeras las que lo hicieron pecar. 27 Por eso, nosotros no vamos a permitir que se cometa este grave pecado contra nuestro Dios. No traicionaremos a Dios casándonos con mujeres extranjeras».
28 Joiadá, que era hijo del jefe de los sacerdotes, tenía un hijo que se casó con una extranjera. Ella era hija de Sambalat el de Horón. Así que obligué al hijo de Joiadá a irse lejos de Jerusalén. Luego hablé con Dios, y le dije: 29 «¡Dios mío, castiga a los sacerdotes y a los ayudantes que no han respetado el pacto que hicieron contigo!»
30 De esta manera los separé de los extranjeros y de todo lo que tuviera que ver con ellos. Luego organicé los turnos de los sacerdotes y de sus ayudantes, cada uno en su tarea. 31 Organicé también a los que traían la leña, para que lo hicieran en las fechas indicadas, y organicé la entrega de los primeros frutos. Luego le dije a Dios: «¡Acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, y trátame bien!»
1 On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever; 2 Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.
4 ¶ And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah: 5 And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests. 6 But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king: 7 And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. 8 And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber. 9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.
10 ¶ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. 11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. 12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries. 13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.
15 ¶ In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. 16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. 19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. 20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. 21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.
23 ¶ In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: 24 And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people. 25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying , Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin. 27 Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives? 28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites. 30 Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business; 31 And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
