Elías habla con Ahab
1-2 No había llovido en tres años, y en Samaria todos estaban pasando mucha hambre, pues no había alimentos. Finalmente, Dios le dijo a Elías: «Ve y habla con Ahab, pues voy a hacer que llueva».
Elías fue a ver a Ahab. 3 Por aquellos días Ahab tenía un mayordomo llamado Abdías, el cual adoraba a Dios fielmente. 4 Cuando Jezabel comenzó a matar a los profetas de Dios, Abdías tomó a cien de ellos, los dividió en dos grupos de cincuenta, los escondió en dos cuevas y allí los alimentó con pan y agua. 5 Ahab le dijo a Abdías: «Vamos a recorrer todo el país en busca de ríos o manantiales. Tal vez encontremos pasto para los caballos y las mulas, y así los mantendremos con vida. Si no encontramos nada, nuestros animales morirán».
6 Entonces se dividieron el país. Ahab fue a recorrer una parte y Abdías la otra. 7 Mientras Abdías recorría el país, se encontró con Elías. Al reconocerlo, se inclinó delante de él en señal de respeto, y le dijo:
—¡Profeta Elías, estoy para servirle!
8 Elías le contestó:
—¿Así que sabes quién soy? Entonces ve y dile al rey que estoy aquí.
9-12 Abdías le dijo:
—El rey ha enviado a muchos hombres a buscarlo por todos los países y reinos. Cuando ellos regresaron sin encontrarlo, el rey les hizo jurar que en verdad no lo encontraron. Le juro a usted por Dios que digo la verdad. No me pida que le diga al rey que usted está aquí, pues en cuanto yo me aleje, el espíritu de Dios se lo llevará a donde yo no lo sepa. ¿Qué pecado he cometido para que usted me pida eso? Hacerlo será como entregarme al rey para que me mate. Porque cuando Ahab venga y no lo encuentre, me matará, a pesar de que yo he obedecido a Dios desde que era joven. 13 ¿Acaso no le han contado lo que hice cuando Jezabel mató a los profetas de Dios? Yo escondí a cien profetas. A cincuenta los puse en una cueva, y a los otros cincuenta los puse en otra. Después los alimenté con pan y agua. 14 ¡Y ahora me pide que vaya y le diga al rey que usted está aquí! ¡Si viene y no lo encuentra, me matará!
15 Entonces Elías le contestó:
—Te juro por el Dios todopoderoso, a quien sirvo, que hoy me reuniré con el rey.
16 Abdías fue a buscar a Ahab y le dijo lo que Elías le había encargado. Después Ahab fue a buscar a Elías, 17 y cuando lo encontró le dijo:
—¿Así que eres tú el que trae tantos problemas sobre Israel?
18 Elías le contestó:
—No soy yo el que trae problemas sobre Israel, sino tú y tu familia. Porque ustedes han dejado de obedecer los mandamientos de Dios y adoran las imágenes del dios Baal. 19 Ordena que los israelitas se reúnan en el monte Carmelo. Que vayan también los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de la diosa Astarté, a los que Jezabel les da de comer.
El Dios verdadero
20 Ahab llamó a todo el pueblo de Israel y reunió a todos los profetas de Baal y Astarté en el monte Carmelo. 21 Elías se acercó al pueblo y le preguntó:
—¿Por cuánto tiempo van a estar cambiando de dios? Tienen que decidirse por el Dios de Israel o por Baal. Y si Baal es el verdadero dios, síganlo a él.
El pueblo no contestó nada. 22 Entonces Elías agregó:
—Yo soy el único profeta de Dios que ha quedado con vida, pero acá hay cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal. 23 Traigan dos toros, y que los profetas de Baal elijan uno. Que lo corten en pedazos, lo pongan sobre la leña y no prendan el fuego. Yo voy a preparar el otro toro, lo voy a poner sobre la leña y tampoco voy a prender el fuego. 24 Pídanle a Baal y yo le pediré al Dios de Israel, y el Dios que responda con fuego es el verdadero Dios.
Todo el pueblo contestó:
—¡Nos parece buena idea!
25 Entonces Elías le dijo a los profetas de Baal:
—Elijan un toro para ustedes y prepárenlo primero, porque ustedes son muchos. Pídanle a su dios que mande fuego, pero no lo enciendan ustedes.
26 Entonces ellos tomaron el toro que les dieron, lo prepararon y oraron a su dios desde la mañana hasta el mediodía. Le decían: «¡Baal, contéstanos!» Los profetas de Baal saltaban alrededor del altar que habían construido. Pero no se escuchó ninguna voz ni nadie respondió nada.
27 Al mediodía, Elías se burlaba de ellos, y les decía: «¡Griten más fuerte! ¿No ven que él es dios? A lo mejor está pensando, o salió de viaje; quizás fue al baño. ¡Tal vez está dormido y tienen que despertarlo!»
28 Los profetas de Baal gritaban fuerte. Se cortaban a sí mismos con cuchillos hasta que les salía sangre, pues así acostumbraban hacerlo en sus cultos. 29 Pasó el mediodía, y ellos siguieron gritando y saltando como locos. Por fin llegó la hora acordada para quemar el toro, pero no se oyó ninguna voz. Nadie escuchó ni contestó nada.
30 Entonces Elías le dijo a todo el pueblo:
—Acérquense a mí.
Todos se acercaron, y Elías construyó el altar de Dios, que estaba derrumbado. 31 Tomó doce piedras, una por cada tribu de Israel: nombre que Dios le puso a Jacob, antepasado de los israelitas. 32 Con esas doce piedras construyó el altar. Luego hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, en la que cabían unos doce litros de agua. 33 Acomodó la leña, cortó el toro en pedazos y lo puso sobre la leña. Entonces Elías le dijo a la gente:
—Llenen cuatro jarrones con agua y mojen por completo el toro y la leña.
Ellos lo hicieron así, 34 y después Elías les dijo:
—Háganlo otra vez.
Ellos echaron nuevamente agua sobre el animal y la leña, y Elías les pidió que hicieran lo mismo por tercera vez. 35 El agua corrió alrededor del altar y llenó la zanja. 36 Cuando llegó el momento de quemar el toro, el profeta Elías se acercó y le pidió a Dios:
«¡Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob! Haz que hoy todos sepan que tú eres el Dios de Israel y que yo soy tu servidor, y que he hecho todo esto porque tú me lo has pedido. 37 Contéstame, mi Dios; contéstame para que este pueblo sepa que tú eres Dios, y que deseas que ellos se acerquen a ti».
38 En ese momento, Dios mandó fuego, y quemó el toro, la leña y hasta las piedras y el polvo. ¡También el agua que estaba en la zanja se evaporó! 39 Cuando todo el pueblo vio eso, se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con su frente y dijo: «¡El Dios de Israel es el Dios verdadero! ¡Él es el Dios verdadero!»
40 Entonces Elías les dijo:
—¡Atrapen a los profetas de Baal! ¡Que no se escape ninguno!
El pueblo los atrapó, y Elías los llevó al arroyo Quisón y allí los mató.
Elías ora para que llueva
41 Después Elías le dijo a Ahab:
—Vete a comer y a beber, porque ya se oye el ruido del aguacero.
42 Así que Ahab se fue a comer y a beber. Elías subió a lo alto del monte Carmelo, allí se arrodilló en el suelo y apoyó su cara entre las rodillas. 43 Después le dijo a su ayudante:
—Ve y mira hacia el mar.
El ayudante fue, miró y le dijo:
—No se ve nada.
Elías le dijo:
—Vuelve siete veces.
44 Después de ir siete veces, el ayudante le dijo a Elías:
—¡Se ve una pequeña nube del tamaño de una mano! Está subiendo del mar.
Entonces Elías le dijo:
—Ve a decirle a Ahab que prepare su carro y se vaya antes de que empiece a llover y no pueda salir.
45 Enseguida, las nubes se oscurecieron, el viento sopló fuertemente y cayó un gran aguacero. Ahab subió a su carro y salió de prisa rumbo a la ciudad de Jezreel. 46 Por su parte, Elías se amarró bien la capa y también salió rumbo a Jezreel, pero llegó primero que Ahab, porque Dios le dio fuerzas.
1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. 2 And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly: 4 For it was so , when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts. 6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7 ¶ And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah? 8 And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here . 9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me? 10 As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. 11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here . 12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth. 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me. 15 And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day. 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 ¶ And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? 18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim. 19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table. 20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.
21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: 24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken. 25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under . 26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it , and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made. 27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. 30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. 31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name: 32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood. 34 And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time. 35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water. 36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. 38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it , they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God. 40 And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
41 ¶ And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, 43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot , and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. 45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel. 46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
