1 1 (3.33) Cuando Sambalat se enteró de que estábamos reconstruyendo el muro, se enojó mucho. Se puso furioso y comenzó a burlarse de los judíos. 2 2 (3.34) Delante de sus compañeros y del ejército de Samaria dijo:
«¿Qué se traen entre manos esos pobres judíos? ¿Creen que podrán reconstruir la ciudad y volver a ofrecer sacrificios? ¿Creen que podrán hacerlo en un día? ¿Piensan que de ese montón de escombros van a sacar piedras nuevas?»
3 3 (3.35) Tobías el amonita, que estaba con él, añadió: «¡El muro que están edificando es muy débil! ¡Basta que se suba una zorra para que se caiga!»
4 4 (3.36) Entonces yo oré:
«¡Dios nuestro, escucha cómo nos ofenden! Haz que todo lo malo que nos desean les pase a ellos. Haz que se los lleven a la fuerza a otro país, y que les roben todo lo que tienen. 5 5 (3.37) No les perdones sus maldades ni te olvides de sus pecados pues nos han insultado por reconstruir el muro».
6 6 (3.38) Así que seguimos reconstruyendo el muro, y como la gente trabajaba con entusiasmo, el muro pronto estaba hasta la mitad de su altura. 7 7 (1) Pero cuando Sambalat, Tobías, los árabes, los de Amón y los de Asdod se enteraron de que la reparación del muro de Jerusalén seguía adelante, y que ya se estaban cerrando las partes caídas, se enojaron muchísimo. 8 8 (2) Todos juntos hicieron un plan para pelear contra nosotros y desanimarnos. 9 9 (3) Entonces oramos a Dios y pusimos guardias de día y de noche para protegernos. 10 10 (4) La gente de Judá se quejaba: «Ya no tenemos fuerzas, y los escombros son muchos. No podremos terminar de reparar los muros».
11 11 (5) Nuestros enemigos pensaban que no conocíamos sus planes, y que nos podrían atacar por sorpresa, para matarnos y así detener la reconstrucción. 12 12 (6) Pero cada vez que nuestros enemigos venían a atacarnos, los nuestros que vivían cerca de ellos nos avisaban. 13 13 (7) Por eso ordené que todos tuvieran listas sus armas: espadas, lanzas y arcos. Luego les pedí que se colocaran agrupados por familias detrás del muro, en los espacios que todavía no habían sido reparados. 14 14 (8) Como vi que estaban preocupados, me levanté y les dije a los jefes, a los gobernadores y a todos los demás: «No tengan miedo. Recuerden que Dios es poderoso, y que ante él todos tiemblan. ¡Luchen por sus compatriotas, sus hijos, hijas, esposas y hogares!»
15 15 (9) Cuando nuestros enemigos se enteraron de que conocíamos sus planes, reconocieron que Dios estaba de nuestra parte. Entonces todos nosotros volvimos a trabajar en la reparación del muro. 16 16 (10) Desde ese momento, la mitad de nosotros trabajaba en la reconstrucción y la otra mitad permanecía armada con lanzas, escudos, arcos y corazas. Los jefes apoyaban a todos los de Judá 17 17 (11) que estaban reparando el muro. Los que cargaban materiales lo hacían de tal manera que con una mano trabajaban y con la otra sostenían su arma. 18 18 (12) Todos tenían su espada sujeta a la cintura mientras trabajaban. El que tocaba la trompeta estaba al lado mío, 19 19 (13) pues yo les había dicho a los jefes y a los asistentes, y a todos los demás:
«El trabajo es demasiado y falta mucho por reconstruir; además, estamos repartidos por todo el muro y lejos unos de otros. 20 20 (14) Por eso, si nos atacan, oirán sonar la trompeta. Si así sucede, corran a ayudarnos. Nuestro Dios luchará por nosotros».
21 21 (15) Desde que salía el sol hasta que aparecían las estrellas, la mitad de la gente reparaba el muro, y los demás mantenían las lanzas en sus manos. 22 22 (16) Yo también le había dicho a la gente que todos debían pasar la noche dentro de Jerusalén para protegerse, y trabajar solamente durante el día. 23 23 (17) Por eso, ni mis parientes ni mis ayudantes, ni los hombres de la guardia que me acompañaban, nos quitábamos la ropa para dormir. Cada uno mantenía el arma en la mano.
1 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews. 2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned? 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall. 4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity: 5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders. 6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
7 ¶ But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, 8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. 9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. 10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall. 11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease. 12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you .
13 ¶ Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows. 14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses. 15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah. 17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon. 18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.
19 ¶ And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another. 20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us. 21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. 22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day. 23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
