Timoteo acompaña a Pablo y a Silas
1 Pablo siguió su viaje y llegó a los pueblos de Derbe y de Listra. Allí vivía un joven llamado Timoteo, que era seguidor de Jesús. La madre de Timoteo era una judía cristiana, y su padre era griego. 2 Los miembros de la iglesia en Listra y en Iconio hablaban muy bien de Timoteo. 3 Por eso Pablo quiso que Timoteo lo acompañara en su viaje. Pero como todos los judíos de esos lugares sabían que el padre de Timoteo era griego, Pablo llevó a Timoteo para que lo circuncidaran.
4 Pablo y sus compañeros continuaron el viaje. En todos los pueblos por donde pasaban, informaban a los seguidores de Jesús de lo que se había decidido en Jerusalén.
5 Los miembros de las iglesias de todos esos lugares confiaban cada vez más en Jesús, y cada día más y más personas se unían a ellos.
Pablo tiene una visión
6 Pablo y sus compañeros intentaron anunciar el mensaje de Dios en la provincia de Asia, pero el Espíritu Santo no se lo permitió. Entonces viajaron por la región de Frigia y Galacia, 7 y llegaron a la frontera con la región de Misia. Luego intentaron pasar a la región de Bitinia, pero el Espíritu de Jesús tampoco les permitió hacerlo.
8 Entonces siguieron su viaje por la región de Misia, y llegaron al puerto de Tróade. 9 Al caer la noche, Pablo tuvo allí una visión. Vio a un hombre de la región de Macedonia, que le rogaba: «¡Por favor, venga usted a Macedonia y ayúdenos!» 10 Cuando Pablo vio eso, todos nos preparamos de inmediato para viajar a la región de Macedonia. Estábamos seguros de que Dios nos ordenaba ir a ese lugar, para anunciar las buenas noticias a la gente que allí vivía.
Pablo en Filipos
11 Salimos de Tróade en barco, y fuimos directamente a la isla de Samotracia. Al día siguiente, fuimos al puerto de Neápolis, 12 y de allí a la ciudad de Filipos. Esta era la ciudad más importante de la región de Macedonia, y también una colonia de Roma. En Filipos nos quedamos durante algunos días.
13 Un sábado, fuimos a la orilla del río, en las afueras de la ciudad. Pensábamos que por allí se reunían los judíos para orar. Al llegar, nos sentamos y hablamos con las mujeres que se reunían en el lugar. 14 Una de las que nos escuchaba se llamaba Lidia, una mujer que honraba a Dios. Era de la ciudad de Tiatira y vendía telas muy finas de color púrpura. El Señor hizo que Lidia pusiera mucha atención a Pablo, 15 y cuando ella y toda su familia fueron bautizados, nos rogó: «si ustedes consideran que soy fiel seguidora del Señor, vengan a quedarse en mi casa.» Y nos convenció.
Pablo y Silas en la cárcel
16 Un día, íbamos con Pablo al lugar de oración, y en el camino nos encontramos a una esclava. Esta muchacha tenía un espíritu que le daba poder para anunciar lo que iba a suceder en el futuro. De esa manera, los dueños de la muchacha ganaban mucho dinero. 17 La muchacha nos seguía y le gritaba a la gente: «¡Estos hombres trabajan para el Dios Altísimo, y han venido a decirles que Dios puede salvarlos!»
18 La muchacha hizo eso durante varios días, hasta que Pablo no aguantó más y, muy enojado, le dijo al espíritu: «¡En el nombre de Jesucristo, te ordeno que salgas de esta muchacha!»
Al instante, el espíritu salió de ella. 19 Pero los dueños de la muchacha, al ver que se les había acabado la oportunidad de ganar más dinero, llevaron a Pablo y a Silas ante las autoridades, en la plaza principal. 20 Allí les dijeron a los jueces: «Estos judíos están causando problemas en nuestra ciudad. 21 Enseñan costumbres que nosotros, los romanos, no podemos aceptar ni seguir.»
22 También la gente comenzó a atacar a Pablo y a Silas. Los jueces ordenaron que les quitaran la ropa y los golpearan en la espalda. 23 Después de golpearlos bastante, los soldados los metieron en la cárcel y le ordenaron al carcelero que los vigilara muy bien. 24 El carcelero los puso en la parte más escondida de la prisión, y les sujetó los pies con unas piezas de madera grandes y pesadas.
25 Cerca de la media noche, Pablo y Silas oraban y cantaban alabanzas a Dios, mientras los otros prisioneros escuchaban. 26 De repente, un fuerte temblor sacudió con violencia las paredes y los cimientos de la cárcel. En ese mismo instante, todas las puertas de la cárcel se abrieron y las cadenas de los prisioneros se soltaron.
27 Cuando el carcelero despertó y vio las puertas abiertas, pensó que los prisioneros se habían escapado. Sacó entonces su espada para matarse, 28 pero Pablo le gritó: «¡No te mates! Todos estamos aquí.»
29 El carcelero pidió que le trajeran una lámpara, y entró corriendo en la cárcel. Cuando llegó junto a Pablo y a Silas, se arrodilló temblando de miedo, 30 luego sacó de la cárcel a los dos y les preguntó:
—Señores, ¿qué tengo que hacer para salvarme?
31 Ellos le respondieron:
—Cree en el Señor Jesús, y tú y tu familia se salvarán.
32 Pablo y Silas compartieron el mensaje del Señor con el carcelero y con todos los que estaban en su casa. 33 Después, cuando todavía era de noche, el carcelero llevó a Pablo y a Silas a otro lugar y les lavó las heridas. Luego, Pablo y Silas bautizaron al carcelero y a toda su familia. 34 El carcelero los llevó de nuevo a su casa, y les dio de comer. Él y su familia estaban muy felices de haber creído en Dios.
35 Por la mañana, los jueces enviaron unos guardias a decirle al carcelero que dejara libres a Pablo y a Silas. 36 El carcelero le dijo a Pablo: «Ya pueden irse tranquilos, pues los jueces me ordenaron dejarlos en libertad.»
37 Pero Pablo les dijo a los guardias:
«Nosotros somos ciudadanos romanos. Los jueces ordenaron que nos golpearan delante de toda la gente de la ciudad, y nos pusieron en la cárcel, sin averiguar primero si éramos culpables o inocentes. ¿Y ahora quieren dejarnos ir sin que digamos nada, y sin que nadie se dé cuenta? ¡Pues no! No nos iremos; ¡que vengan ellos mismos a sacarnos!»
38 Los guardias fueron y les contaron todo eso a los jueces. Al oír los jueces que Pablo y Silas eran ciudadanos romanos, se asustaron mucho. 39 Entonces fueron a disculparse con ellos, los sacaron de la cárcel y les pidieron que salieran de la ciudad.
40 En cuanto Pablo y Silas salieron de la cárcel, se fueron a la casa de Lidia. Allí vieron a los miembros de la iglesia y los animaron a seguir confiando en Jesús. Luego, Pablo y Silas se fueron de la ciudad.
1 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: 2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek. 4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem. 5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily. 6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, 7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. 8 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. 10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. 11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; 12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days. 13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.
14 ¶ And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us : whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. 15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us , saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there . And she constrained us.
16 ¶ And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. 18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
19 ¶ And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, 20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, 21 And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. 22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them . 23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: 24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25 ¶ And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. 29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house. 35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go. 36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace. 37 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out. 38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. 39 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city. 40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.
