1 And certain men which came down from Judæa taught the brethren, and said , Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. 2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. 3 And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren. 4 And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them. 5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
6 ¶ And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. 7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. 8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
12 ¶ Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
13 ¶ And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me: 14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. 15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, 16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: 17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. 18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. 19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: 20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. 21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day. 22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely , Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren: 23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia: 24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment: 25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. 30 So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle: 31 Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation. 32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them . 33 And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles. 34 Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still. 35 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
36 ¶ And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do. 37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. 38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. 39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus; 40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God. 41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.
El concilio en Jerusalén
1 De Judea llegaron algunos que enseñaban a los hermanos que, si no se circuncidaban según el rito de Moisés, no podían ser salvos.
2 Como Pablo y Bernabé tuvieron una fuerte discusión con ellos, se acordó que los dos y algunos otros fueran a Jerusalén para tratar esta cuestión con los apóstoles y los ancianos.
3 Como habían sido enviados por la iglesia, pasaron por Fenicia y Samaria, y allí hablaron de la conversión de los no judíos, lo cual hizo que todos los hermanos se alegraran mucho.
4 Cuando llegaron a Jerusalén, fueron recibidos por la iglesia, los apóstoles y los ancianos, y allí contaron todo lo que Dios había hecho con ellos.
5 Pero algunos creyentes de la secta de los fariseos, que estaban allí, se opusieron a ellos y dijeron: «Es necesario circuncidarlos, y mandarles que cumplan con la ley de Moisés.»
6 Los apóstoles y los ancianos se reunieron para tratar este asunto,
7 y luego de mucho discutir, Pedro se levantó y les dijo: «Queridos hermanos, ustedes saben que hace algún tiempo Dios determinó que yo mismo proclamara a los no judíos el mensaje del evangelio, para que creyeran.
8 Y Dios, que conoce los corazones, los confirmó y les dio el Espíritu Santo, lo mismo que a nosotros.
9 Dios no hizo ninguna diferencia entre ellos y nosotros, sino que por la fe purificó sus corazones.
10 Entonces, ¿por qué ponen a prueba a Dios, al imponer sobre los discípulos una carga que ni nuestros padres ni nosotros hemos podido llevar?
11 Lo que creemos es que, por la bondad del Señor Jesús, seremos salvos lo mismo que ellos.»
12 Al oír que Bernabé y Pablo contaban las grandes señales y maravillas que Dios había realizado por medio de ellos entre los no judíos, toda la multitud guardó silencio;
13 y cuando terminaron de hablar, Jacobo respondió y dijo: «Hermanos, escúchenme.
14 Simón nos ha contado cómo Dios visitó a los no judíos por primera vez, para añadirlos al pueblo que cree en su nombre.
15 Las palabras de los profetas concuerdan en esto, pues está escrito:
16 »“Después de esto volveré,
y reedificaré el caído tabernáculo de David;
repararé sus ruinas
y lo volveré a levantar,
17 para que el resto de la humanidad busque al Señor,
y también todas las naciones que invocan mi nombre.”
18 »Esto lo dice el Señor. Lo ha dado a conocer desde los tiempos antiguos.
19 »Mi consejo es que no inquieten a los no judíos que se convierten a Dios,
20 sino que los instruyan para que se aparten de la idolatría, del libertinaje sexual, del comer carne de animales ahogados, y de comer sangre.
21 A Moisés no le falta quien lo predique en las sinagogas, cada día de reposo, en cada ciudad y desde los tiempos antiguos.»
22 A los apóstoles, a los ancianos y a toda la iglesia, les pareció buena idea elegir de entre ellos a algunos hermanos, y eligieron a Judas, también conocido como Barsabás, y a Silas, pues sobresalían entre los demás hermanos, y los enviaron a Antioquía con Pablo y Bernabé.
23 Por conducto de ellos enviaron un escrito: «Los apóstoles y los ancianos, a nuestros hermanos no judíos en Antioquía, Siria y Cilicia. Reciban nuestros saludos.
24 Hemos sabido que algunos hermanos que estaban con nosotros, a quienes no les dimos ninguna orden, los han perturbado e inquietado a ustedes con sus enseñanzas.
25 Hemos llegado al acuerdo, que nos parece bien, de elegir a algunos hermanos y enviarlos a ustedes con nuestros amados hermanos Bernabé y Pablo.
26 Ellos han expuesto su vida por causa del nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
27 Así que con ellos van Judas y Silas, quienes en sus propias palabras les dirán esto mismo.
28 Al Espíritu Santo y a nosotros nos ha parecido bien no imponerles ninguna otra carga, sino solo esto que necesitan saber:
29 que deben abstenerse de comer lo que se ha sacrificado a los ídolos, de comer sangre o la carne de animales ahogados, y del libertinaje sexual. Harán bien en evitar estas cosas. Que estén muy bien.»
30 Cuando los hermanos que fueron enviados llegaron a Antioquía, reunieron a la congregación y entregaron la carta.
31 Cuando los hermanos terminaron de leerla, se alegraron por el consuelo recibido.
32 Como Judas y Silas también eran profetas, con mucho afecto fraternal consolaron y confirmaron en la fe a los hermanos,
33 y después de haber pasado un tiempo con ellos, los hermanos los despidieron en paz, para que regresaran con quienes los habían enviado.
34 Silas prefirió quedarse allí,
35 así que Pablo y Bernabé continuaron enseñando la palabra del Señor en Antioquía, y anunciando el evangelio a muchos más.
Pablo se separa de Bernabé y comienza su segundo viaje misionero
36 Algunos días después, Pablo le dijo a Bernabé: «Volvamos a visitar a los hermanos en las ciudades donde hemos anunciado la palabra del Señor, para ver cómo están.»
37 Bernabé quería que los acompañara Juan, que también era conocido como Marcos,
38 pero Pablo no estuvo de acuerdo porque Juan se había separado de ellos en Panfilia y no había trabajado con ellos.
39 Tan grande fue el desacuerdo entre ellos, que terminaron por separarse: Bernabé tomó a Marcos y se embarcó a Chipre,
40 pero Pablo escogió a Silas. Los hermanos lo encomendaron a la bendición del Señor,
41 y a su paso por Siria y Cilicia fue confirmando a las iglesias.
